9-7 Lady Bucks Hit Stride

by Jim Morgan

bucks-basketballFARWELL – “We are on a roll now!” exclaimed coach Carl Gentzyel as the Bucktail Lady Bucks (9-7) won their fourth straight game at home against Williamson 72-57 this past Monday night. WOW!!

It’s been a great home stand run for the Bucktail girls. Now they go on the road for a couple of games as the Lady Bucks have five out of the last six games on the road.

Mark your calendar NOW for Friday Feb. 7, this season’s last home game for the Lady Bucks as they will recognize the seniors during the game.

During the last four games, the Lady Bucks have been averaging 67 points per game. Coach Gentzyel would tell the Lady Bucks “as long as we can average 50 points a game, we should win most of them.

Lady Bucks’ tall girls have been playing great underneath the basket. Tiffany Werts for the third straight game in a row had another double-double with 12 rebounds and 18 points. Hannah Shearer has been setting good screens and grabbing some key rebounds as well as boxing out opponents for teammates to receive the rebounds. All-State player Lori Horton of Williamson needed 22 points to get her 1,000th point. Werts and Shearer did a great job on containing Horton off the boards as she scored 16 points. “It’s been a great team effort during this home stand,” coach Gentzyel mentioned.

Maria Morgan set the tone of the game with the first three points off a three pointer deep in the corner. Then if Williamson would come out, she would drive to the basket and dish as she finished with 43 points, 9 assists and 7 steals. In the first quarter, it was a shootout between the teams as Williamson led 16-15.

Alaina Tripp and Cheyanne Casper had a couple of big baskets from the side. This just opened up the middle as Morgan would cut as Tripp and Casper would feed it right back. Werts started to clean up on the offensive side of the boards as she would get the put-back. Bucktail posted 24 points in the second quarter to go up at halftime 39-32.

Morgan went to work in the third quarter as she scored 16 of her points in the quarter. Werts continued to clean the offensive boards from the weak side and putting it back in. It was a shootout between the teams as the Lady Bucks outscored Williamson 24-21 to extend the lead 63-53. The Lady Bucks started the fourth quarter by staying out front with the ball, until Williamson decided to play man-to-man. That was not going to work as Morgan, Tripp and Casper just kept the ball under control at the top. The Lady Bucks extended their lead as much as 16 points before Morgan just dribbled around in the front court to run the clock out.

In the JV game, the Lady Bucks won 34-29 over Williamson as Birthday girl Emalea Mills was high scorer with 11 points.

Last Saturday the Lady Bucks welcomed the Lady Warriors of Canton to Bucktail as the Lady Bucks win 70-29. Both Morgan and Werts have had the hot hands all week. Tripp added her first double digit in scoring on the year with 10 points and 6 rebounds. Morgan was high scorer with 36 points, 8 assist, 6 rebounds and 5 steals. Werts is just getting more confident as the season goes on. She posted 18 points and 15 rebounds for another double-double on the week.

The Lady Bucks jumped out to a 31-10 first quarter lead as coach Gentzyel pulled back the press in the second quarter. In the JV game, it was all Bucktail as they won over Canton 45-20. High scorer for the Lady Bucks was Emalea Mills 13 points.

Last Thursday, it was all the Lady Bucks over the Lady Tigers of Benton as the Lady Bucks won 70-46. In the first quarter, all five starters put points on the boards as they jumped out to a 15-8 lead. Coach Gentzyel had the Lady Bucks press and extended that lead to halftime 40-21. Morgan posted half of her total 34 points in the second quarter. All the girls played a great game on this night as Werts posted her first double-double of the week with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Shearer also had a nice game as she finished with 9 rebounds and 8 points. Morgan was able to rip down 14 rebounds on this night.

In the JV game, it was a battle to the finish as the Lady Bucks won over Benton 27-24. Lady Bucks high scorer was Emalea Mills 9 points.

Bucktail will go on the road for two games as they start on Thursday at Benton for a 6:00 PM start. Then on Monday they will travel up to Sullivan County for a 6:30 PM tip-off.  See you on the court.  GO LADY BUCKS!!!!!
