Words of Grace – April 7, 2016
In Family Weekly Anna Herbert tells the story of a little boy going to school. Monday was the first day, and he enjoyed it tremendously. Each day that followed, he seemed to like it more and more.
Then Friday came and he returned home despondent. “Mom,” he complained, “I’ve been laid off for two days.”
Even though we may be out of school now, we continue to go to school when it comes to the Word of God. We don’t get it all at once. “For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little” (Isaiah 28:10).
The aged apostle Paul gave good counsel to young Timothy concerning God’s Word. He was to give his attention to reading it, meditating upon it, and studying it. George Bilby Walker wrote this prayer about learning in God’s school:
“I feel so tired of school work, God, and every night it seems that when I put away my books, I see them in my dreams. Regardless of the many things that I would rather do, I first must finish, homework, God, and that is never through!
In spite of my complaining, though, I really can’t deny that I am very fortunate, because I know that I am learning things that I am sure will help me day by day to meet whatever needs, O God, I have along the way.”
