Lady Bucks Prevail Over Montgomery
FARWELL – It was just last week the Lady Bucks (6-7) dropped three straight games and Coach Carl Gentzyel was talking to them about a quality win against a good opponent. Well this past Tuesday at home, the Lady Bucks worked hard for that quality win over Montgomery as they outscored them 55-51. It was just one week ago that the Lady Red Raiders started that losing streak when they beat the Lady Bucks 66-48. What a turn around and a good win for the Lady Bucks as Coach Gentzyel smiles. “We needed that win” Coach Gentzyel replies. These girls worked hard yesterday at practice on defense. Tiffany Werts and Hannah Shearer did a great job on the boards as they combineD for 19 rebounds. At Montgomery, we did not control the boards like tonight. We allowED them to have two and three shots everytime. Tonight they only allowed them with one shot.
In the first quarter, Montgomery got out to a 9-5 lead before Maria Morgan started throwing darts from the three point area as she hit two straight threes for the lead and the Lady Bucks just continued to roll. Cheyanne Casper added a three to finish the quarter 15-11 Lady Bucks. When Morgan finally missed a shot from the field, she was 4 for 4 from three point land as she finished the first half with four threes and going 8 for 8 from the foul line. Morgan finished the game as the high scorer with 31 points as she added 5 steals and 8 rebounds. Alaina Tripp and Werts added to the scoring in the second quarter as the Lady Bucks outscored Montgomery 21-10 in the quarter.
With Werts in foul trouble, Emalea Mills and Shae Cowfer was a big asset to the Lady Bucks defense as they combined for 8 rebounds and 3 steals. These two girls have been improving in every game. With the Lady Bucks up 36-21 to start the third quarter, Coach Gentzyel kept the pressure on defense as the Lady Bucks were trying to control to slow the game down on offense. Still the Lady Bucks were able to lead into the fourth quarter 47-30.
With the Lady Bucks starting to get out of rhythm on the offense, turnovers started becoming an issue. This was giving Montgomery more momentum as they hit two striaght threes with 32 seconds left and the score 53-49. Shearer came up big as she missed both foul shots and somehow received the rebound for the two points as it sealed the win with 2.4 seconds left.
In the JV game, the Lady Bucks magic this game was not going to happen as Montgomery wins 25-22. Lady Bucks high scorer Allison Schenck with 8 points.
Last Wednesday the Lady Bucks try stealing a victory at St. John Neumann. But a second quarter let down by the Lady Bucks allow the Lady Knights to win 68-54. In the first quarter, Morgan was able to find Shearer and Tripp with hot hands as they kept the Lady Bucks in the game. Lady knights jumped out to a 14-11 lead. But the trouble started in the second quarter for the Lady Bucks as careless ball handing sparked the Lady Knights to extend the lead at halftime to 34-20.
Shearer and Werts had a nice second half as Shearer ended the night with a double-double of 15 rebounds and 12 points. We could not box out strong this game as the Lady Knights just kept getting their own rebounds. Lady Bucks did make a nice run of 13-2 before St. John called timeout. That timeout changed the game as the Lady Knights came out of the timeout with a 6-0 run to extend the lead that the Lady Bucks would not cut into again.
In the JV game, the Lady Bucks avoided a last quarter rally to beat St. John Neumann 24-18 as the Lady Bucks scorer was Allison Schenck 8 points.
This past Saturday, the Lady Bucks traveled down to Shamokin to take on the District IV champions for five straight years Our Lady of Lourdes. Lourdes won the game 57-45. Lourdes came out hot from the field in the first quarter as they hit 6 threes to have the lead 26-12 at the end of the quarter. The rest of the three quarter was even as the score was 34-34. They had three guards that cameout hot from the field as the Lady Bucks had hands in their face but everything was finding the bottom of the net. Morgan was the high scorer of the game with 23 points as she added 10 assists and 6 rebounds for a double-double. Werts had 10 points with her 7 rebounds.
In the JV game, the Lady Bucks came from behind in the fourth quarter to win 18-17. Yes, that score is correct. Lady Bucks scorer was Paige Sockman and Emalea Mills each with 4 points.
