Shamokin Pulls Away from Central Mountain at the Wire for 70-61 Win

Wildcats Played With Heart Until the End

cm-basketballBALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP — The Central Mountain boys basketball team played nose-to-nose, basket-for-basket with a talented Shamokin High basketball team, but the visiting Indians, leading by two after three periods, ran the first seven points of the final quarter and came away with a 70-61 victory Wednesday night.

For the Wildcats it ended a 4-game winning streak and dropped coach Scott Baker’s team to 10-5. Shamokin, a team starting five seniors, moved to 18-1 on the year and moved the Indians a step closer to the Heartland Conference title.

Central Mountain led 14-12 after one, riding seven points from junior guard Kyle Everhart. Shamokin moved to a 27-25 halftime advantage and the contest stayed close through the third period, ending with the Indians on top by a 49-47 score. Brody Baker put in seven points in the period to keep the ‘Cats close.

But Shamokin would hustle to seven points to open a 56-47 lead to start the final period and not look back. Central Mountain was forced to foul and could not close the margin over the game’s final minutes. Reserve Wyatt Koch had a career-best eight points in the quarter, but the rest of the team could only total six more, the Wildcats outscored 21-14 in the final eight minutes.

Central Mountain was hampered by the absence of center Cole Reeder who sprained an ankle in the DuBois game on Monday. He was coming off two straight games in which he had a double-double in points and rebounds; he was missed as Shamokin controlled the offensive boards. Coach Baker said afterwards that Reeder could be back as soon as a Saturday afternoon contest at Selinsgrove.

Coach Baker acknowledged the Wildcats have played well in recent weeks and said he told the team in the locker room after the game that the quest for a District 6 title remains a goal, but cautioned team members to take a game-by-game approach.

Everhart finished with 13 points to pace the Wildcats. Brody Baker had 10 and Alex Garbrickand Wyatt Koch followed with 8, Justin Neff netted 7 while Wyatt Bumbarger scored 6. Landon Breon had 5 points, Nick Carpenetti had 4.

Indian sharpshooter Isaiah Reiprich led the visitors with 25 points.
