Wildcats Finish No. 2 at Top Hat
WILLIAMSPORT — The Central Mountain wrestling team made a solid showing in its 2015-16 lid-lifter, a second place finish to the champion Jersey Shore Bulldogs at the annual Tom Best Memorial Top Hat wrestling tournament.
The Wildcats had moved within three points of the Bulldogs as the first-third-fifth place bouts began Saturday night. But Central Mountain would finish an otherwise fine tourney with a 2-5 final round mark while Jersey Shore crowned three champs en route to the title; the Bulldogs finished with 201 points to the Wildcats’ 181. Hazleton was a distant third with 152.5.
Central Mountain actually took a final round lead after junior Geo Barzona won his second tourney title, this time taking the 113 pound crown with a 6-4 win over Wyatt Lutz of Montoursville. But ‘Shore would come back with three titlists in Hunter Zondory at 120 pounds, Seth Young at 152 and Haydn Swartwood at 160.
The Wildcats had runners-up in Caleb Turner at 170, Isaac Porter at 195 and Hunter Weaver at 220 pounds. Fourth place finishers were Seth Andrus at 126, Colton Weaver at 145 and Brandon Miller at 160. Earning a fifth was Tanner Weaver at 152; Cody Coleman had a sixth at 106 and taking seventh were Logan Long at 132 and Bryce Bitner at heavyweight. Central Mountain took 13 wrestlers to the Top Hat and all 13 scored team points as 11 wrestlers placed between first and seventh. Eight participants finished higher than their seeds, helping to secure the second place finish for the defending champions.
Central Mountain will next be in action starting next Friday, hosting its own tourney, the powerful King of the Mountain.
District 6 preseason favorite Mifflin County opened its season at the Ephrata Duals Saturday, going 4-1. The Huskies, who will also be at the King of the Mountain, lost the title match to Downington East by a score of 49-29.
