Unlucky Ricochet Ends Wildcats’ Season

HOLLIDAYSBURG – It took exactly 107 minutes, 27 seconds to establish the victor of the semi-final round of the boys’ District 6 soccer playoff.

Central Mountain and host, Hollidaysburg both battled deep into the second 15 minute “sudden victory” overtime period before the Golden Tigers found a bit of good fortune and scored off a random ricochet to end the contest with a 1-0 sudden victory.

Much of the game was played in the middle of the field with each team making regular forays into enemy territory only to be turned back empty handed for their efforts.

Offensively, the Wildcats had their chances by attacking the box and dominating the Golden Tigers with a 9-3 advantage for shots on goal. That offensive charge was led by Micah Brinker in the middle with Kevin Hook and Kline Williams attacking from the corners. For corner kicks it was another tie with each team tallying two.

Defensively, it was a balanced effort by Alex Garbrick and Arie Miller protecting the outside edges and Matt Storeman protecting the middle. In all, Wildcat keeper, Brody Baker recorded three saves on the night. Holidays burg answered with 7 saves to seal the win.

The boldest threat for the Wildcats came in the closing minutes of the first overtime period when Kline Williams penetrated deep in the box fading to the left then kicked back across the grain on a sharp shot to force the keeper to stretch, right … but wasn’t enough to get past the keeper’s grasp.

The game-endings score came off an effort where Hollidaysburg challenged the CM defense once more and benefited from the ball bouncing their way that was deflected off a Wildcat defender before rolling into the net.

The loss ends the season for Central Mountain and was the last game for Wildcat seniors: Arie Miller, Alex Garbrick, Daniel Brinker, Kevin Hook, Jeffrey Weaver and Kline Williams.
