Mifflinburg Zips Past Wildcats 52-35 (Video Report)

cm-footballMIFFLINBURG – Going in, Central Mountain’s Friday night football game at winless Mifflinburg looked like one the visiting Wildcats could handle to end a 3-game midseason losing streak.

But the hometown Wildcats had ideas of their own, racing to a 24-7 halftime lead and never looking back, scoring a 52-35 triumph. The win improved Mifflinburg’s record to 1-6 and dropped Central Mountain to 2-5 with a difficult final three games awaiting them.

As has been the case more than a few teams this year, Central Mountain got off to a slow start on both sides of the ball, unable to move the ball in the first quarter while Mifflinburg had two long drives for two touchdowns and a 14-0 lead.

Central Mountain would finally get untracked offensively with a 71-yard drive, culminating in a 1-yard run from quarterback Justin Neff. Austyn Carson’s extra point would make it 14-7 but the Wildcats would get no closer.

Mifflinburg put up the next 10 second period points to take a 24-7 lead into the half. They all but iced the game when Carson’s second half kickoff was returned 85yards by Tristan Martin, the extra point making it 31-7. The Wildcats would finally get moving but could get no closer than a couple scores behind for the rest of the game.

Central Mountain got great offensive mileage out of Neff and Hunter Weaver. Neff had a 43-yard scoring pass to Tyler Zablocki and one for 6-yards to Hunter Baker. He also added an 18-yard touchdown run for the game’s final score with just over four minutes remaining. Weaver picked up 224 yards rushing on 29 carries while Neff added 139 on 18 rushes; the junior quarterback was 8-of-19 passing for 139 yards and two touchdowns.

Central Mountain finished with 363 yards of offense but had to play catch-up ball all night long, Mifflinburg answering after every Wildcat score.

The Wildcats return home next Friday night to take on Tyrone (5-2), the Golden Eagles losing Friday night by a 34-17 score to Clearfield. Then it’s undefeated Southern Columbia (7-0) Friday, Oct. 30 and a trip to 6-1 Jersey Shore Friday, Nov. 6.

Shore downed Milton Friday by a 56-0 score. Other finals included Bellefonte 30, Penns Valley 7; Berwick 57, Williamsport 26; Huntingdon 35, BEA 0: Shikellamy 34, Shamokin 14; Selinsgrove 30, Montoursville 24; and Cumberland Valley 60, Mifflin County 6.
