lhu-fieldhockeyLOCK HAVEN – Leading scorer Rachel Valentine (Souderton, Pa./Souderton) scored in the 16th minute and the Bald Eagles defense held strong as the Lock Haven University field hockey team today beat perennial power Penn State, 1-0 for the first time in 30 years.

The win was the sixth straight for Lock Haven (13-2) and marked LHU’s first win over Penn State (5-8) since the 1985 season. Lock Haven and Penn State first played in 1954 and today marked the 43rd all-time meeting between the two local rivals.

Valentine put Lock Haven up, 1-0 in the 16th minute (15:05) on the game’s first shot. The goal was her team-leading 12th of the season and came after she ripped down the right side of the field and flipped the ball far post one-handed.

From the moment LHU took the lead, the Bald Eagle defense tightened and played fantastically, thanks to the efforts of Colleen McCabe (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./William Tennent) and Stephanie Whiteman(Trincity, Trinidad and Tobago/Bishop Anstey East), among others.

Haven goalkeeper Paige Stuppy (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) pitched the shutout, making three saves on the way to her ninth win of the season.

LHU returns to Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) action on Friday at 3 p.m. on the road at Saint Francis (Pa.).
