Tom Gioglio Named LHU AD
LOCK HAVEN – Lock Haven University has named Tom Gioglio its new Director of Athletics. Gioglio is no stranger to the NCAA Division II level or the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) as he’s spent the last 11 years at East Stroudsburg University.
He replaces Mark Sherburne who had resigned from the position effective June 5 after two years on the job.
An LHU release said Gioglio is both honored and excited about his new duties.
“Lock Haven is an extraordinary university with top-notch athletic programs that have a tremendous tradition of success both academically and athletically,” said Gioglio.
“Success begins with great individuals and I am eager to start working with our talented student-athletes, coaches, faculty, staff and administration as well as meet the alumni, who are the core of the LHU family. I am thrilled to begin and lead the next chapter of Bald Eagle Athletics.”
”This was an important hire for LHU Athletics and Tom fits what we were looking for,” said LHU President Michael Fiorentino. “His experience at the Division II level and familiarity with the PSAC, along with a strong fundraising plan will help move LHU Athletics forward and lay a strong foundation of success for years to come.”
During his time at ESU, the Warriors enjoyed success, both on and off the field, and Gioglio was instrumental in all facets of leading the school’s 20-team athletic department. Under his guidance, East Stroudsburg won six PSAC Championships and earned 20 NCAA playoff appearances. This past year (2014-15), ESU finished seventh in the PSAC Dixon Trophy Standings. The Dixon Trophy, awarded by the PSAC to the member institution whose athletic program earns the best overall finish in conference championships and/or regular-season play. It was one of ESU’s highest finishes in recent memory.
A total of 13 ESU coaches received PSAC Coach of the Year honors during Gioglio’s tenure. During Gioglio’s time at ESU, the Warriors’ student-athletes also achieved tremendous academic success, recording an Academic Success Rate, grade point average and graduation rate, which ranked much higher than the general student body. Following Gioglio’s arrival in 2004, there has been a 145 percent increase in athletic scholarships at ESU. Prior to ESU, Gioglio served as the Director of Athletics at Dakota State University from 2000-2004. He served as Director of Athletics at the University of Saint Mary from 1998-2000. Gioglio also brings with him 20 years of coaching experience ranging from the high school to Division I level. He coached football, wrestling, baseball, and men’s and women’s tennis.
Gioglio is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and the D2 Athletic Directors Association. Gioglio graduated from Montclair State University in 1986 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. He earned his master’s degree in education from nearby Mansfield University in 1988.
He earned his doctorate in higher education administration at West Virginia University in 1993 and completed a second master’s degree in secondary education from Northern State University in 1996. Gioglio will begin his duties as LHU’s Director of Athletics on Monday, August 24.
