State Budget Stalemate Forces Cutback

MILL HALL — The continuing budget stalemate in Harrisburg is having an effect on senior services in Clinton County.

The STEP Office of Aging in Williamsport today confirmed that the Mill Hall Senior Center “will be temporarily consolidated” with the Clinton County Community Center off Walnut Street in Lock Haven. The temporary closing of the Mill Hall facility in the Mill Hall Fire Hall will be effective Monday, August 3.

STEP director Fred Shrimp said because of the Harrisburg budget impasse, now nearing the end of its first month, STEP is not receiving funds for its office of aging services.

He told therecord-online STEP transportation will be available for older adults who need that service to attend the center in Lock Haven.  Lunch, exercise classes and other activities are available at the Clinton County Community Center.  Meals on wheels previously delivered from the Mill Hall Center will be delivered from the Clinton County Community Center.

STEP officials emphasized services were not being cut, that seniors may go to any of the other area senior centers. Facilities in Lock Haven, Renovo and Jersey Shore are not affected by the Mill Hall curtailment.

A similar state budget shutdown had caused a similar disruption of services in 2009.
