Jr. Crickets Collar State in Playoff Opener

leg-ba-logo2BEECH CREEK — The Beech Creek Junior Legion baseball team kicked off the West Branch League playoffs the way they played during the regular season, winning their first round contest by a 6-0 score over State College Monday evening.

Top seed after rolling through the WBL with only two regular season losses, the Junior Crickets rode the strong right arm of A.J. Smith to shut out State. Smith went the distance, a 7-inning three hitter, all harmless singles. Smith fanned eight, walked three and hit one State batter and was never in serious trouble.

Meanwhile the Beech Creek offense did enough to put up two runs each in the second, third and fifth innings. Evan Prough brought in the first two runs with a double, Ethan Watkins plated two more in the third with a triple and Watkins added a two-run double in the fifth, scoring Zach Eck and Asher Corl who had singled.

Prough also had a single, as did Eck, Corl and Tanner Lavelle.

The Junior Crickets will be back in playoff actionTuesday against a foe to be determined. The game will be at Beech Creek Community Field or the Lock Haven University Foundation Field, game time 5:30 p.m.
