Words of Grace

By Rev. Mahlon Nevel

“Do you believe in God?” A man answered, “No, I’m too smart to believe in God.”

The Bible calls the person who says there is no God, a fool. (Psalm 14:1) He is not called a wise man; he is called a foolish man.

Anyone who does not believe in God is an atheist. On the other hand, one who believes in God is a theist. Theos is one of the names for God. Theology is the study of God.

If you believe that there is a God, you do well. However, the devil and his demons also believe, and tremble. (James 2:19)

Is it enough just to believe in God? “You believe in God,” Jesus said “believe also in me” (John 14:1).

We believe in God, who loved us so much that he gave his only begotten Son for us. We also believe in Jesus, the Son of God, who gave his life for us. (John 3:16)

Jesus prayed for the world that God loved, that all would be given eternal life. (John 17:2) And eternal life is given to those who know God as the only true God, and know Jesus Christ, the one that God sent. (V.3).

John Brown was a well-known pastor in Scotland several hundred years ago. A member of his congregation was on her deathbed, and he visited her with the desire, after the custom of those days, to try her faith.

The minister wanted to make sure that her faith was not only in God, but in the Lord Jesus. He said, “You believe in God, believe, also in me.”
