FARWELL- Tuesday night in Farwell showcased a pair of teams fighting to make it into the postseason. Heavily favored 3A South Williamsport and the much smaller 1A Bucktail battled back and forth.

South’s senior standout Abby Akers put on a show by netting a game-high 26 points, but it would be freshman Carly Quimby that became the Lady Mounties’ hero in overtime.

Bucktail had a hero of their own in Arionna Winkleman late in the fourth quarter.

Both teams finished a back and forth opening quarter deadlocked at 7-7.

A 16-12 second quarter had the host Lady Bucks up 23-19 at the break.

A 9-8 third quarter effort from Bucktail had them up 32-27 entering the final frame. Bucktail managed just 5 points in the final quarter of regulation to the Lady Mounties’ 10 points.

Bucktail’s Eva Sockman was fouled on a no call from the officials, which resulted in an Akers’ basket in the closing seconds of regulation. Akers appeared to give the Lady Mounties the victory, but a foul line jumper from Winkleman as the buzzer sounded sent the Mid Penn Clash into overtime.

Winkleman, who netted a career-high 5 points also hit a key free throw with 1:21 remaining in regulation to tie up the score.

The Lady Bucks had multiple chances in the extra frame to score, but failed to do so. Quimby’s go ahead basket was the only points scored in the overtime period. This gave South the win to help them improve to 9-7 on the season.

Matti Mason led Bucktail with 15 points. Kendall Wagner scored 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Sockman scored 6 points and pulled down 13 rebounds in the loss.

The loss dropped Bucktail to 4-11. Bucktail will next be in action on Friday night when they face Benton at home.
