The 1979 Lacrosse Team (Team)

You can’t tell the story of collegiate lacrosse without the Lock Haven women’s lacrosse program.

The Bald Eagles capped off an historic run in 1979 by winning the very first Association for Intercollegiate Athletics (AIAW) championship, hosted by Hollins College in Hollins, Virginia. The Haven took down the University of Delaware 14-5 in the first round, before defeating Loyola of Maryland (8-4) to earn a trip to the final.

In the championship, Lock Haven outlasted host and top-seeded Hollins in a 5-4 thriller to earn the program its first national title.

In similar fashion, the Bald Eagles soared to the first PSAC Women’s Lacrosse Championship with victories over Millersville (5-3) and Shippensburg (7-4).

The Haven finished the regular season 10-4, while three of its losses came at the hands of nationally ranked opponents.

The Bald Eagles were led by hall of fame head coach Sharon Taylor, who secured her first national championship with the program.

The starting line-up included Diane Minshall, Cheryl Fluck, Kim Wallace (captain), Tacie Yerkes, Kim Pallastrone, Sue Woolston, Donna Jamison, Lisa Hand, Amy Oursler, Ellen Hearn, Sue Sadler and Nancy Burton.
