Obituary – Carol A. Rockey Brown
Carol A. Rockey Brown, 83, of Lock Haven, died peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2025, surrounded by her family. She was hospitalized briefly in UPMC Williamsport before her passing.
Born Oct. 10, 1941 in Lockport, she was the daughter of Samuel C. Rockey and Dorothy Mae Probst. The family moved to Chicago when she was 4. She had happy memories of the city and of going to school there through eighth grade.
The family returned to Lock Haven in 1954, and Carol graduated from Lock Haven High School in the class of 1959. Four years later, she graduated summa cum laude from Lock Haven State College with a double major in English and Spanish.
She met Carson V. Brown at a staff meeting of the college newspaper, and they were married in 1961. He became a County Judge and a Senior Judge for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He preceded her in death just five months ago, after 63 years of marriage.
Carol taught English for three years at Big Spring High School in Newville, followed by three years teaching Spanish at Waynesboro High School. The Browns returned to Lock Haven in 1970, and eight years later, Carol began her career of teaching Spanish at Lock Haven Senior High School. She hosted an international trip for local students every other year, and retired after 30 years of teaching and expanding her students’ horizons.
An active member of the community with wide ranging interests, Carol served Covenant United Methodist Church on the administrative board, the trustees, and nearly every church committee over the years.
She was instrumental in starting the Lock Haven Area Shoe Bank at the church and continued to served faithfully on that organization’s board.
She was also very involved with Millbrook Playhouse and the Clinton County Historical Society and served as president of both. She loved to read and was active with the Literacy Council. When her two sons were young, she volunteered with Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. Her favorite sports teams were those her sons and grandchildren played on, and she often attended their games.
Surviving are her sons, Dr. Carson V. (Sally) Brown II and Dr. Jason D. (Leslie) Brown, both of McElhattan; four grandchildren, Madison (Matt Galasso) of Philadelphia, and Natalie, Meredith and Andrew, all of Lock Haven; two step-grandchildren, Jessica Baum and Michael Muzzin, both of Delaware; and two great-grandchildren, Marisol and Colton.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her older brother, Harry Probst, who died in infancy, and her younger brother, Dr. Samuel R. Rockey of Sagamore Hills who died in 2015.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 11 in Covenant United Methodist Church, 44 W. Main St., Lock Haven, with Rev. Justin Frear officiating. A life celebration will follow at the church. Private interment will be in Swissdale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to Millbrook Playhouse, 258 Country Club Lane, Mill Hall, millbrookplayhouse.org.
