LHU Women’s Basketball comeback bid falls short, drops heartbreaker at Edinboro

EDINBORO – The Lock Haven women’s basketball team dominated the final period to overcome a late fourth quarter deficit on the road, but Edinboro drilled a game-winner at the buzzer to escape with a 72-70 victory in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East vs. West crossover game on Wednesday afternoon (Dec. 17).

The result ends a three-game winning streak for Lock Haven, who moves to 7-3 overall and 2-2 in the PSAC. Edinboro continues its hot start to the season and improves to 9-2 overall and a perfect 3-0 in the PSAC.

After a slow third period for Lock Haven, the Bald Eagles shot 50 percent from the field and outscored the Fighting Scots, 21-14, through the opening 11 minutes of the final period to lead 70-67 with under a minute remaining.

However, Edinboro scored out of a timeout to cut its deficit to one and with 22 seconds to go forced a Bald Eagles miss to set up a game-winning opportunity.

As the clock closed in on zero, the Fighting Scots drilled the game-winning jumper to go ahead 72-70 and escape their gym with the PSAC crossover victory.

Jenadia Jordan led the way for Lock Haven and finished with 22 points (8-of-15) and four rebounds, while knocking down three shots from behind the arch.

Kiera Baughman and Madeline Evans rounded out the Bald Eagles in double figures after scoring 18 and 11 points, respectively. Evans pulled in a team-high seven rebounds, while the duo also finished a perfect 13-of-13 at the charity stripe.

Rhlyn Rouse chipped in seven points to lead the second unit in scoring.

As a team, the Bald Eagles shot a game-high 92 percent from the charity stripe after knocking down 22-of-24 attempts.

In the first half, Lock Haven led 17-14 after the first period, but the Fighting Scots flipped the script in the second with a 17-15 advantage to trim The Haven lead to 32-31 heading into the break.

The Fighting Scots held Lock Haven to three made field goals in the third period and knocked down nine to build a 56-49 advantage heading into the final period and setting up the exciting finish.

The Bald Eagles are set to host No. 4/No. 11 Gannon at Thomas Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon (1 p.m.) in a battle between the two PSAC favorites to win the Eastern and Western Division.
