Obituary – Diane Jane Schmidt
Diane Jane Schmidt, 76, of Freeland, Michigan, passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side on Tuesday, August 13, 2024 in Traverse City, at Munson Medical Center.
She was born on November 20, 1947, in Renovo, Pennsylvania, to the late Edward and Ruth (Daugherty) Goodman.
After graduating from high school, Diane pursued her passion for helping others by earning a nursing degree. It was during this time that she met the love of her life, George “Marty” Martin Schmidt, in a charming moment at a local grocery store. The two quickly fell in love and embarked on a journey of life together that was filled with adventure and joy.
Diane and Marty shared a love for travel, and their most cherished trips were on their motorcycles, including a memorable ride to California and back. They also made an annual pilgrimage to Diane’s favorite destination, Mexico Beach, Florida, where they spent a month with dear friends every year for the past decade.
A woman of many talents, Diane was a skilled quilter and a master of her embroidery machine, creating countless beautiful gifts for friends and family. She had a special touch with flowers in the garden, was a fabulous cook, and took great pride in canning and preserving her home grown vegetables to share with loved ones. While Diane’s calendar was always filled by events and outings with her many friends, her house is where everyone wanted to be. She had a way of making everything beautiful, and her family finds solace in her enchanting backyard that invites birds during the day and lights up at night. Above all, Diane’s greatest joy was her family, whom she adored deeply.
Diane’s fun-loving ways and laughter will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Her kindness, creativity, and warmth touched the lives of many, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories.
She is survived by her beloved husband of almost 58 years, Marty, her daughter Barb (Pete) Monson of Blaine MN, granddaughters, Amanda (Mitch) Wehland, Caitlin (Alex) Copa, her twin sister Debbie (Mike) Frank, siblings, Sue (Dale) VanDevusse, Edward (Sara) Goodman, her aunt Twila Daugherty, and her best friend Connie along with many other loving family members and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her 7 day old son Martin William Schmidt and her 43 year old son David Martin Schmidt.
The funeral for Diane will take place on Friday, August 23, 2024 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 1020 Court Street, Saginaw, Michigan at 11:00 A.M. Visitation will be at the church beginning at 10:00 A.M. A luncheon will be provided at the grade school located at 2745 W Genesee Ave, Saginaw, MI after the funeral.
