PennDOT Issues Update on Atherton Street Project for End of March

CLEARFIELD – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) updated drivers on its Atherton Street (Route 3014) project that stretches from Curtin Road to just north of Westerly Parkway in State College. Motorists traveling through the work zone can expect the following the week of March 25.

From Monday, March 25, through Thursday, March 28, two crews will continue drainage improvements between West Irvin Avenue and Center Lane. Another crew will place concrete curbing and gutters along this stretch, while a third will pour concrete foundations for traffic signal posts. Flaggers in the roadway will enforce an alternating traffic pattern.

Work continues at the Westerly Parkway intersection, but the contractor will limit its schedule to between 9:00 AM and 3 PM.

Although the long-term traffic pattern will remain in place, the contractor will not complete any work on Friday that further disrupts traffic ahead of Easter.

PennDOT expects the current traffic pattern to be in place until early June while the contractor completes drainage improvements through the work zone.

PennDOT urges motorists to pay attention to work zone and directional signage to enhance safety and keep traffic moving efficiently. Message boards alerting motorists to the construction zone and changing traffic patterns remain in place.

Overall work on the project includes roadway reconstruction, drainage improvements that include pipes and inlets, water and sewer lines, concrete curbing, sidewalks and detectable warning surfaces, pavement markings, traffic signals and supports, and miscellaneous items.

HRI, Inc. of State College is the contractor on this $30.7 million project. PennDOT anticipates the contractor completing the project in the fall of 2024, but all work is weather and schedule dependent.

PennDOT reminds motorists that intermittent traffic stops are possible for short periods during work activities and urges drivers to use caution when traveling through the work zone. PennDOT also reminds drivers not to follow construction equipment into the closed lane and to use both lanes to the merge point to minimize traffic back-ups and shorten travel delays when approaching the work zone.
