LHU Men’s Wrestling closes regular season in style, powers by Edinboro 41-7
EDINBORO- The Lock Haven men’s wrestling team recorded three tech falls, two pins and two major decisions as the Bald Eagles soared by host and longtime rival Edinboro (2-11, 1-7 MAC), 41-7, in Mid-American Conference (MAC) action tonight (Saturday, Feb. 17).
Overall, Lock Haven won eight of 10 bouts to close the regular season in style.
One of the three tech falls came from standout Wyatt Henson (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg), ranked No. 16 at 141 pounds. The win marked his 32nd of the season, but more importantly it was his 17th tech fall of the year, which broke Lock Haven’s all-time single-season record. The Haven record was 16 (1988-89) and held by Hall of Famer Brad Lloyd.
For Henson, 14 of his 17 tech falls this season have come vs. NCAA Division I opponents as he leads all of DI wrestling in the category.
Nick Stonecheck (Alpharetta, Ga./Buford) and Tyler Stoltzfus (Mifflinburg, Pa./Saint Joseph’s Academy) recorded pins at 149 and 174, respectively.
No. 18 Anthony Noto (Lima, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) and No. 31 Gable Strickland (Benton, Pa./Benton) added tech falls at 125 and 133, respectively. Lock Haven opened the dual with three straight techs and Henson’s 21-5 victory in just over two minutes at 141 pushed the Bald Eagles’ lead to 15-0.
DaShawn Farber (Bethlehem, Pa./Nazareth) and Colin Fegley (Mahanoy, Pa./Mahanoy) won by major decision at 157 and 184, and Eric Alderfer (Harleysville, Pa./Faith Christian Academy) won by forfeit at 165.
Lock Haven won the first eight bouts of the match, all by bonus points, and led 41-0 before the Fighting Scots got on the board with wins in the final two matches at 197 and 285.
With the win, and this being the final dual of the 2023-24 campaign, Lock Haven will finish the season with a .500 mark in Mid-American Conference action at 4-4. Overall, the victory moved the Bald Eagles to 7-11 in duals.
Last night (Friday, Feb. 16), Lock Haven hosted Cleveland State and the visiting Vikings won a thriller that came down to the final bout of the night.
The Bald Eagles will now focus on the postseason.
