Fast start, bonus points carry LHU Men’s Wrestling to win over George Mason

LOCK HAVEN – The nationally-ranked Lock Haven men’s wrestling team won the first five bouts of the night and the No. 22 Bald Eagles never looked back as they rolled by visiting George Mason (9-7, 2-3 MAC), 33-6, tonight (Thursday, Jan. 25) in Mid-American Conference (MAC) action.

In all, the Bald Eagles won eight of 10 bouts and racked up bonus points on four occasions, thanks to two pins, a tech fall and a major decision.

With the win, The Haven’s second straight in MAC East action, the Bald Eagles move to 5-7 overall in duals. Lock Haven is now 2-1 in MAC action and a perfect 2-0 vs. Mid-American Conference Eastern Division opponents.

No. 8 Anthony Noto (Lima, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) and Nick Stonecheck (Alpharetta, Ga./Buford) won by pin at 125 and 149 pounds, respectively.

No. 13 Wyatt Henson (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg) extended his win streak to 25 matches with his 12th tech fall of the season at 141.

Brad Morrison (Landisburg, Pa./West Perry) helped put the finishing touches on the dominating victory with a major decision at 197.

No. 29 Gable Strickland (Benton, Pa./Benton), Connor Eck (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem), Tyler Stoltzfus (Mifflinburg, Pa./Saint Joseph’s Academy) and Ethan Miller (York, Pa./Central York) all added wins for the Bald Eagles.

Lock Haven raced out to a lopsided 23-0 lead at halftime as the home team thrilled the packed Thomas Fieldhouse crowd with wins in the night’s first five bouts.

At 125, Noto – a returning All-American – needed just 4:05 to pin JB Dragovitch. It marked Noto’s first action this season in front of the home crowd and his early dominance energized the frenzied Bald Eagle faithful.

Strickland grinded out a hard-fought 4-2 win at 133 and pushed the Lock Haven led to 9-0. Strickland’s third-period takedown proved the difference in the win.

At 141, Henson continued to shine with another tech fall, but this time it came in a battle of nationally-ranked wrestlers. Henson took down No. 33 Nate Higley, 21-5, at the 4:23 mark after he put on a takedown clinic.

Stonecheck scored a quick takedown and earned the fall nearly as fast as he pinned Kaden Cassidy at the 1:44 mark of the 149-pound match.

Eck made it five straight Lock Haven wins with a 15-11 win over JT Chance. Eck led 15-2 after the first period and held off a late charge from Chance in the high-scoring 157-pound bout.

At 174, Stoltzfus took down Paul Pierce, 5-3, after scoring on a late third-period takedown.

Morrison majored Ruben Karapetyan 10-1 at 197 after scoring a takedown in each of the three periods.

Miller put the exclamation point on the win with a dominating 8-2 victory over Donovan Sprouse in the night’s final bout at 285.

Of note, Lock Haven checked in at No. 22 in WIN Magazine’s national team rankings this week.

Tonight, the Bald Eagles celebrated their annual Community Night event and this year’s match was in honor of the late Mike Millward ’84, a former Lock Haven standout wrestler and longtime local referee. Proceeds from tonight’s ticket sales will benefit the Mike “Mouse” Millward Scholarship fund.
