LOCK HAVEN – Sarah Grimes and Jeanie Robinson of The Common Place Church coordinated a Hair Fair and Wellness Day that was hosted at Robb Elementary School on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The event offered free haircuts provided by local cosmetologists, free oral screenings and complementary toothbrushes provided by Shelby Rice, RDH/DPH from the Clinton County Community Dental Clinic, and hair braiding and styling services provided by Tyonna Hartley. The event also featured yoga and other activities for kids to participate in while waiting for their haircut or oral screening. All current Robb Elementary students along with their siblings were invited to sign up for the free event.
The Hair Fair and Wellness Day saw a large turnout of students who arrived at the start of the event, keeping the stylists busy for the first few hours. The stylists worked quickly to keep up with the influx of students and were able to take a short break for lunch around noon as the crowd began to dwindle. As the afternoon progressed, there was a second wave of students arriving, with some having pre-registered for a haircut and others showing up as walk-ins.
Lunch was provided by Robb Elementary School for the stylists who offered their time and professional services for the event, which had been postponed from Saturday, January 6, due to inclement weather. Additionally, Avenue 209 Coffee House, home of the Common Place Church, provided them with free coffee.
According to Sarah, the initiative came about when a member of The Common Place Church mentioned her desire to give back to the community by using her trade as a cosmetologist. “It started out with just one beautician from our church, Jeanie Robinson, who wanted to share her talent with the community,” she said. Jeanie is the owner of Scissorhands Salon located in Howard. As far as Sarah’s inspiration behind hosting a Hair Fair and Wellness Day goes, “We just want to be a blessing, and we want to offer something practical,” she said. “It’s an easy way to love on our community, and we love Robb Elementary School,” Sarah added that the main goal of the initiative was to offer something to Robb Elementary students that would make them feel good about their body, health, and overall appearance to start the new year.
Cosmetologists who provided their services free of charge were Jeanie Robinson from Scissorhands Salon in Howard, Amanda Long and Jenna DeGarmo from The Hair Refinery in Mill Hall, Stephanie Walizer from Country Cuts Hair Salon in Mill Hall, and Michelle Lininger and Jen Pick from Mane Designs in Lock Haven. Tyonna Hartley offered her talents by providing hair styling and braiding services to the kids as well.
Sarah expressed her appreciation for Robb Elementary School along with Principal Tyler Barth, who welcomed Common Place Church members to hold the event in the school’s cafeteria when the idea was first presented to him back in early December. Sarah also extended a thank you to the members of The Common Place Church who are willing to lend a hand to the initiative. “I’m just so grateful. We’ve had such an awesome response,” she said. “The stylists offering their time and talents are such a blessing,” she added.
According to Sarah, during the event, several stylists expressed interest in possibly hosting another hair fair in the future.
