No. 8 LHU Women’s Wrestling caps trip to National Dual Championships with victory
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The No. 8 Lock Haven women’s wrestling team wrapped up two days of action vs. elite competition today (Saturday, Jan. 6) at the 2024 NWCA/USMC Multi-Division National Dual Meet Championships. The Bald Eagles closed their tournament run with a thrilling 24-23 victory over Adrian.
Lock Haven opened the day with a 28-15 loss to No. 23 Emmanuel University (Ga.).
The two-day national dual championships began Friday (Jan. 5), and the event was held in the University of Northern Iowa’s UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Yesterday (Friday, Jan. 5), the Bald Eagles fell to No. 22 Lindenwood, 29-19, in their tournament opener, and The Haven was edged out by No. 11 Presbyterian, 24-21, to round out day-one action.
On the season, Lock Haven is now 8-4 overall in dual action.
Emma Heslin (Marlborough, Conn./RHAM), No. 4 Kaelani Shufeldt (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina) and Lily Sherer (Shohola, Pa./Delaware Valley) picked up wins in the day’s opener vs. Emmanuel. All three recorded impressive tech falls.
Lock Haven and Adrian each won five bouts in the dual, but the Bald Eagles used three pins and two tech falls to slip by for the victory.
Heslin and Shufeldt got Lock Haven going quick with back-to-back pins at 101 and 109 pounds, and Sherer won by tech fall at 143.
In the end, back-to-back bonus-point wins from Jessica Johnson (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) and Trinity Monaghan (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) in the dual’s final two bouts at 170 and 191, respectively, proved to be the difference maker. Johnson recorded a tech fall and Monaghan put the match away with a pin in just 41 seconds.
Heslin, Shufeldt and Sherer were each a perfect 2-0 on the day.
