LHU Women’s Wrestling soars to perfect 4-0 day at Kalahari Duals
SANDUSKY, OH – The No. 7 Lock Haven women’s wrestling team went a perfect 4-0 Saturday as the Bald Eagles headlined the 2023 Kalahari Duals, hosted by Heidelberg University at the Kalahari Resorts and Conventions Center in Sandusky, Ohio. Two of Lock Haven’s four wins Saturday came vs. nationally-ranked opponents.
The Bald Eagles opened the day with a 26-21 win over No. 23 Simpson College and they moved to 2-0 with a lopsided 41-4 victory over Augustana College (Ill.). Lock Haven’s third win of the day came as The Haven knocked off No. 13 Tiffin, 30-11. The Bald Eagles capped the perfect 4-0 day with another dominating victory as they closed the tournament with a 44-5 win over Alma.
With the 4-0 day in hand, Lock Haven improved to an impressive 7-1 this season in dual action.
Grace Stem (Snow Shoe, Pa./Bald Eagle), ranked third in the nation at 143 pounds, was a perfect 4-0 on the day with a tech fall and a pin.
Madison Matta (Blue Ridge, Pa./Waynesboro) was unstoppable and finished the day 4-0 with four pins. Lily Sherer (Shohola, Pa./Delaware Valley) dominated with three pins and a 3-0 record.
In the day’s opening win over nationally-ranked Simpson, Lock Haven won six of nine contested bouts. Stem had a tech and the Bald Eagles racked up three pins. Carly Gross (York, Pa./West York), Sherer and Matta recorded pins in the win.
In the lopsided win over Augustana, The Haven won eight of nine contested bouts and collected six total pins. Jayleah Pletz (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin), Gross, Sherer, Matta, Stem and Jessica Johnson (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) collected pins in the victory.
Lock Haven won six of nine contested bouts and used two pins to drop No. 13 Tiffin. It was pins from Sherer and Matta that proved to be a big difference in the win for The Haven.
The Bald Eagles closed the day by winning nine of nine of contested bouts including five pins vs. Alma. Emma Heslin (Marlborough, Conn./RHAM), Pletz, Matta, Paige Jackson (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Spring Mills) and Azariah Moore (Montross, Va./Westmoreland) closed the day with pins.
Of note, Johnson was 3-0 on the day and Gross was 4-0.
