Obituary – Samuel L. Bierly
Samuel L. Bierly, 71, of Mill Hall, passed away Monday, December 11, 2023 at UPMC Gatehouse, Williamsport.
Born January 16, 1952 in Lock Haven, he was the son of the late Harold S. and Alice Bowmaster Bierly.
On August 12, 1974, he married the former Deborah Rupert with whom he celebrated 49 years of wonderful marriage together in August of this year.
Sam was a 1969 graduate of Bald Eagle Nittany High School and obtained his Associates Degree in Electronics from Penn State University in 1971.
From 1971 to 1977, Sam served in the United States Navy where he was stationed on the NAS Oceana in Virginia Beach, VA. He was assigned to the A6 Squadron on the USS America in Vietnam and was a member of the electronic countermeasures team. Sam also served on the USS Nimitz. He finished his Naval career with onshore duty at the NAS Oceana.
After his Honorable Discharge from the Navy, he returned to college, graduating from Lock Haven University in 1980 with degrees in mathematics, physics and teaching. Sam later obtained his Masters Degree.
Sam began his teaching career in 1980 as a math and physics teacher in Keystone Central School District, working the majority of his tenor at Sugar Valley High School until his retirement in 2006.
He was a member of the Mackeyville United Methodist Church.
Sam was passionate about golf and especially enjoyed his rounds at Belles Springs Golf Course where he was a member for over 30 years. He liked traveling and enjoyed his involvement with the Boy/Cub Scouts, Troop 133.
In addition to his wife, Deb, he is survived by two sons, Samuel C. (Courtney) Bierly of Pleasant Gap and Patrick E. (Jill) Bierly of Massachusetts; four grandchildren: Willow, Helen, Hudson and Samuel J.; a brother, Forney (Shirley) Bierly; brother-in-law, Fred Bucheit; brother-in-law, Duane Rupert.; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Kelly and Terry Shannon; and several nieces.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Carole Bucheit.
Sam was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to all who is now golfing and making holes-in-one in Heaven.
A Memorial Service with Veteran Honors will be held on Friday, December 15, 2023 at 11 A.M. at the Donald G. Walker Funeral Home, Inc., 231 High St., Flemington, PA 17745 with Pastor Dan Christopher officiating.
Friends and family will be received at the funeral home on Friday from 10 A.M. until the time of the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Sam’s memory may be made through the funeral home to Gatehouse at Divine Providence Hospital or Mackeyville United Methodist Church.
