Wildcats Advance Nine to Quarterfinals at Top Hat Tournament

By Joe Walker

WILLIAMSPORT, PA-The first day of the annual Tom Best Memorial Wrestling Tournament is in the books and the Central Mountain Wildcats find themselves sitting at the top of the 25-team field. The Wildcats entered 18 wrestlers into the tournament and all 18 are still alive to come back for day two.

Although the Wildcats have 18 wrestlers in the event, only 12 are counting towards team points, as you can only have one wrestler per weight count towards team scoring. The Wildcats are missing number 13, as former State Champion and standout Dalton Perry is not entered, as he is nursing a hand injury. The Wildcats did not have sophomore Collin Bauman who is also out with a hand injury.

The Wildcats lead the field with 68.5 points after day one, while Clearfield is close behind with 65.5 points. Saucon Valley is third with 65 and is followed by Easton and Northampton with 670 points to round out the top five teams. The Jersey Shore Bulldogs are sitting in 22nd place with six points, but have all six of the wrestlers they entered still alive in the consolation rounds.

The Wildcats advanced nine wrestler into Saturdays Quarterfinal round, as Gavin Heverly (107), Aiden Kunes (127), Patrick Tarantella (133), Luke Simcox (145), Griffin Walizer (152), Jacob Weaver (172), Bryce Brungard (189), Rocco Serafini (215) and Giovanni Tarantella all won their opening bouts. Patrick Tarantella and Brungard won two bouts to advance, Brungard with two falls.

The Wildcats had nine wrestlers fall into the consolations, but all nine came through with wins to stay alive in the consolations. Luke Garmen (114), Caden Stoner (114), Jaggar Pardoe (121), Carnell Noone (145), Luke Annanea (160), Hunter Donley (160), Jacob Nyman (172), Wyatt Kramer (189) and Nicholas Lose (215) all stayed alive with wins. Noone had the quickest with pinning his opponent in just 8 seconds.

Coach Biff Walizer and his staff were really pleased with the aggressiveness the kids showed and said this was the first time that the team has got through the opening day without losing anyone and having them all come back for day two.

Action gets underway on Day two at 10:00 am with Consolations and Quarterfinals and then at 5:00 pm with matches for First, Third and Fifth place finishes.
