Joseph James Nevins – Obituary
Joseph James Nevins, 91, died on February 5, 2015 at home surrounded by his family.
Born in Sodus Point, NY on June 6, 1923, he was the son of the late Ligouri Anthony and Katherine Sheehan Nevins.
On May 12, 1950, he married the former June Marie Heverly.
Joe attended Immaculate Conception schools, was a 1941 graduate of Lock Haven High School and later attended Lock Haven Teachers College.
Joe served in the US Army during World War II, serving in the South Pacific Theater from 1943 to 1946.
He was employed by the US Postal Service for 36 years as a letter carrier, serving Flemington, Castanea, and Lock Haven.
Joe dedicated many years of public service to the citizens of Lock Haven, serving as a City Councilman and Chairman of the City Planning Commission. During this time, Joe was one of the many leaders in the community who fought for and supported the implementation and construction of the dike levee flood protection project.
Joe was a member of Holy Spirit Parish and the former Immaculate Conception Parish for more than 80 years and served as a Eucharistic Minister.
He was a life member of the Hope Hose Co. No. 2 where he served as President and as relief driver in his earlier years.
He was a Charter Member of the Golden K Club, the Lock Haven Elks Lodge, and a social member of the Sons of Italy. In recent years he especially enjoyed the comradely of many friends and old time acquaintances that gathered at the Sons.
Joe led a very active and youthful life. Through the age of 90 he enjoyed riding his bike at Riverview Park, having breakfast at the Texas with his wife and friends, and going for walks in town.
Joe is survived by his wife, June, of 64 years; a son, Robert (Rikki) Nevins and a daughter, Beth (William) Lawless, both of Lock Haven; grandchildren: Patrick (Stella) Moll-Nevins, Katie Nevins, Emily (William) Miller, Lynn Lawless, and Abby Lawless; a sister, Gertrude (Bunny) Nine; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John S. and Ligouri A. (Brudge); and a sister, Catherine (Sis) Kennedy.
Friends will be received at the Moriarty Funeral Home & Crematory, 112 E. Church St., Lock Haven on Sunday, February 8, 2015 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, February 9, 2015 at 11 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church of Holy Spirit Parish, 300 W. Water St., Lock Haven, with Rev. Joseph Orr officiating. Interment will be in Saint Mary’s Cemetery.
