Bald Eagles drop Clarion 34-6

Gavlock, Garcia Earn Pins for LHU

lhu-matsLOCK HAVEN – The Lock Haven University wrestling team won eight-of-10 bouts, racking up bonus points in five of them, as the Bald Eagles dominated visiting Clarion University, 34-6 in Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) action Wednesday night.

Lock Haven (5-10, 2-1 EWL) recorded two pins, two major decisions and a tech fall as the Bald Eagles hammered Clarion (1-13, 1-5 EWL) for The Haven’s second EWL win of the season. The was the fifth of the season for second-year head coach Scott Moore and it snapped three-match losing streak to Clarion, which dates back to the 2010-11 season. LHU improves to 2-1 in league action.

Ronnie Perry (Christiana, Pa./Solanco), Bobby Rehm (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor), Dan Neff(Quarryville, Pa./Solanoc), Elias Biddle (Turbotville, Pa./Warrior Run), Dillon Gavlock (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain), Fred Garcia (Donora, Pa./Ringgold), Phil Sprenkle (Seven Valleys, Pa./Dallastown) and Brad Emerick (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) all won for Lock Haven.

Gavlock and Garcia recorded pins, while both Perry picked up a tech fall. Neff and Sprenkle both won by major decision.

David Sheesley (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) and Hunter Jones opened the match with a thriller at 125. Sheesley did all he could to score a takedown at the buzzer, but was edged by Jones 13-11, putting Clarion up 3-0.

Following the loss at 125, Lock Haven rattled off five straight victories to take a commanding 21-3 lead.

Perry (133) recorded a 20-0 tech fall (5:59) over Matt Liggett to put LHU up 5-3 and the Bald Eagles rolled from there.

Rehm (141) won 6-1, before Neff, ranked No. 27 at 149, majored Brodie Zacherl, 19-6.

Biddle (157) returned to the lineup and won 2-0.

Gavlock picked up the first of two Haven pins on the night, sticking Clarion’s Slade Horner, the reigning EWL Athlete of the Week at the 2:23 mark of their 165-pound bout.

Tyler Wood (West Chester, Pa./West Chester-Rustin) dropped a hard-fought 2-0 decision at 174.

Garcia, ranked No. 28 at 184, got the Bald Eagles rolling again with a pin. He led Daniel Sutherland 13-3 with he pinned him with a minute (6:00) to go in the match. The win marked the 94th of Garcia’s career, as he inches closer to the 100-win club.

Garcia’s win sparked a three-match win streak for LHU to close the match.

Sprenkle (197) majored Ryan Darch, 15-3 and Emerick (285) won 5-0.

Lock Haven returns to action Friday night, taking on No. 15 Edinboro in EWL dual action at 7 p.m., before taking part in Saturday’s Edinboro Open.
