State okay given for Renovo area Route 120 ATV connector link

LOCK HAVEN, PA – Local officials are heralding word from PennDOT that a stretch of Route 120 in Chapman Township and Renovo can now be used by ATV operators during the ATV season, from Memorial Day weekend into September each year. That means, effective immediately, ATV operators can use the designated parts of Route 120 through the end of the ATV trail riding season, this year Sunday, Sept. 24.

Local officials and state representatives met at Clinton County’s Piper Building on Wednesday to detail the information that ATV enthusiasts were waiting to hear. Word on the connector from Summerson Mountain Road in Chapman Township and through Renovo means the link between trails is now in place.

County commissioner Jeff Snyder said local interests were concerned there would not be enough funding to build the connector and there needed to be another option prior to the pilot program closing in April 2024.
Snyder said he met with County Planning staff and came up with this option that includes a route that passes in front of many of the businesses in the Renovo area. He said Jason Albright from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources was very supportive and asked PennDOT to do a safety study on the route. The study was carried out and approved. There was no charge from PennDOT and the highway agency has already erected the ATV signs.

Snyder told The Record, “I am so pleased with the cooperation that we have received from DCNR, PennDOT, CMATV Club, Renovo Borough, and the surrounding municipalities that have supported the use of their roadways to connect ATV trails and businesses. To my knowledge this is the longest section of approved State highway in the commonwealth for ATV usage. We need to appreciate it and use it wisely.”

The connection is permanent during the ATV riding season that starts Memorial Day to the 4th Sunday in September. You must have a valid driver’s license and insurance.

Meanwhile state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn recently announced new grant funding totaling $1,397,400 for all-terrain vehicle (ATV) and snowmobile facilities and trails in Pennsylvania.

Grant recipients include the Central Mountains ATV Association, Inc., $320,000 to design for the development of approximately six miles of the Whiskey Springs to Bloody Skillet ATV Connector Trail in the vicinity of South Renovo.
