Words of Grace
By Rev. Mahlon Nevel
We learn about a man by the name of Cornelius in Acts 10. He was a centurian soldier from the city of Cesarea who was also very religious (V. 1)
A devout and God-fearing man, he gave generously to those who were in need. He was also a praying man, always praying for others. (v.2)
When an angel sent from God appeared to him, he was afraid. “What is it, Lord ?” he asked. The angel answered “Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God.
God had taken note of all that he had done. But his religion was not enough, so Simon Peter was sent to him to tell him about Jesus.
Cornelius was told about how God sent his word, preaching peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. He learned about how Jesus was slain and died on the cross, and was raised from the dead.
“To him give all the prophets witness,” Peter declared, “that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.”
A religious man found out that his religion was not enough. Cornelius came to the Savior, and through believing on his name, received forgiveness of sins.
