LH men’s wrestling falls in Collegiate Duals against #25 Cal Poly
NEW ORLEANS – The Lock Haven men’s wrestling team (1-5) on Tuesday capped their trip to New Orleans for the Journeymen Collegiate Duals 2.0 against No. 25 Cal Poly (3-3), which saw the Mustangs grab the 23-15 dual win.
At 125 pounds, Anthony Noto (Lima, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima (NC State)) got the Bald Eagles off on the right foot with a 7-4 win over the Mustangs’ No. 14 Antonio Lorenzo. The 20th-ranked Noto picked up the gritty win in the day’s only matchup of ranked opponents.
Gable Strickland (Benton, Pa./Benton) kept the momentum rolling and pushed The Haven ahead 6-0 with a dominant 7-1 win over Ethan Rotondo at 133 pounds.
The Mustangs grabbed a pair of decision victories at 133 and 141 to tie the dual up at 6-6, but Ashton Eyler (Millersburg, Ohio/ Claymont High (Iowa Central CC)) came up huge at 157 with a second period pin. The redshirt senior muscled his way to the pin at 4:26 and handed LHU a 12-6 lead.
Cal Poly cut the lead to 12-9 with a win at 165, before Tyler Stoltzfus (Mifflinburg, Pa./Saint Joseph’s Academy) delivered a decisive 9-2 win over Brawley Lamer at 174 pounds. Stolzfus fell just short of a major decision and pushed Lock Haven ahead 15-9.
The Bald Eagles upset bid fell just short as the nationally-ranked Mustangs grabbed a trio of wins at 184, 197 and 285 to bring home the win, 23-15.
The Haven grabbed four victories on the day, including Eyler’s pin, but late bonus points from Cal Poly sealed the hotly contested dual meet.
