Bucktail fends off improved Sheffield 42-22 on the road
By Bees O’Brien
SHEFFIELD, PA- Bucktail made the long Saturday trip to Warren County to take on Sheffield in a rematch of Week 1. Sheffield played nothing like the team the Bucks saw in the opening weekend. The Wolverines fought hard during their Homecoming game, but in the end the Bucktail offense was too much.
Bucktail racked up 513 total yards of offense and got five touchdowns from Braylon Fantaski as Bucktail rolled 42-22 over the winless Wolverines. There was nothing pretty about the victory. The Bucks gave up five turnovers and were penalized 10 times for 75 yards.
“We didn’t take advantage of the turnovers, unfortunately.” Said Sheffield head coach Mike Barr.
The Bucks would strike first, or so it would seem. Fantaski broke loose a punt return 75 yards, only to be called back due to the first of many Bucktail infractions. It wouldn’t matter however as Brody Pentz would find Fantaski on an 84 yard catch and run for the game’s first points.
With Bucktail leading 6-0, Fantaski would extend Bucktail’s lead to 12-0 following a 21-yard touchdown run. Pentz would cap off the drive with a 2-pt conversion.
Up 14-0 Fantaski would charge in from three yards out to give the Bucks a 20-0 halftime lead.
The third quarter would continue to see Bucktail unleash an out of the ordinary passing attack. Pentz would connect with Fantaski for a pair of scores to start the second half. A 4-yard touchdown pass that was set up by Fantaski’s 35 yard completion to Brett Mason and a 40 yard pass from Pentz.
Bucktail led 34-0 before Sheffield finally found offensive life. The Wolverines began to put together drives against the Bucks’ second unit. Their first was capped off by a 5-yard run from Jeremiah Richardson. Mason Davis completed the two-point try and Sheffield now trailed 34-8.
Colby Barr began to unload in the fourth quarter. Barr would complete 70 of his career-high 153 yards to Gage Mott-Macalush for a scoring strike. The Wolverines completed their try for two and trailed 34-16 with 6:17 remaining in the game.
Braylon Fantaski wasn’t quite done with Sheffield just yet. The junior running back would break loose on a 71-yard touchdown score. Brody Pentz would follow it up with a 2-point conversion and Bucktail now led 42-16.
With 57 seconds left Barr would cap off his best high school game of his career with a 35-yard touchdown strike to Mason Davis to set the 42-22 final.
Fantaski’s offensive numbers were exceptional. He finished with 123 yards rushing, 172 yards receiving, 35 yards passing and 5 total scores.
Brody Pentz had a career day throwing the ball for the Bucks. He scorched the Wolverines for 214 yards and a pair of scores.
Sheffield dropped to 0-4 on the season and will travel to Terror Stadium and face 3-2 Otto-Eldred. Bucktail, now 2-2 will finally return home. The Bucks will face a tough, but winless Cameron County (0-5).
