LHU: Field Hockey scores in final seconds, tops Rider and moves to 7-0
LOCK HAVEN, PA – Alyssa Endrick (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) scored with eight seconds left in the game and lifted the Lock Haven field hockey team (7-0) to a thrilling 3-2 victory over visiting Rider (3-3).
The Bald Eagles are now a perfect 7-0 on the season, the team’s first 7-0 start since 2004.
Today’s game capped Homecoming Weekend 2022 at The Haven and closed a six-game homestand for Lock Haven. The Bald Eagles are a perfect 6-0 at home on Charlotte Smith Field this season.
Rider opened the scoring just 3:13 into the contest and led 1-0 after the opening quarter. The Bald Eagles tied the match in the 17th minute when Kayla Maciejewski (Oley, Pa./Oley Valley) tucked home a shot-pass from Martina Spangenberg (Buenos Aries, Argentina/Piaget).
The two teams remained deadlocked at 1-1 at halftime.
In the second half, Lock Haven struck quick as Spangenberg scored 3:26 into the third quarter.
With just over 10 minutes to play in the match, Rider tied the contest at 2-2.
Just when it looked like the game was headed to overtime, the Bald Eagles drew up some late-game fireworks and Endrick ran onto a long Anna May Barbusca (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) pass. Endrick ran through the Rider defense on a breakaway with just the goalkeeper to beat, and she converted for the winner.
Jazmin Palma (Entre Rios Providence Argentina/Colegio Sagrado Corazon de Jesus), Ellie Mead (Chesterfield, Va./Cosby (Coker)), Megan Beppler (West Pittston, Pa./Wyoming Area), and Florance de Kroon (Driebergen-Rijsenburg, Netherlands/Jordan Montessori Lyceum Utrecht) led the defense
Brooke Hofsass (Hershey, Pa./Lower Dauphin) put in a strong effort in the midfield.
Lock Haven goalkeeper Kelsey Felix (Hallam, Pa./Eastern York) made three important saves in the win.
On Friday (Sept. 16), Lock Haven opened Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) play with a thrilling 2-1 (shootout) victory over visiting La Salle.
