Words of Grace 10/21
By Rev. Mahlon Nevel
It has been said that, of all the Old Testament prophecies, Isaiah 53 is the greatest of them all. The prophet predicted the coming of the Jewish Messiah.
He would be despised and rejected by men.
He would be a man of sorrows who was acquanted with grief.
He would bear our griefs and carry our sorrows.
He would be wounded for our transgressions.
He would be bruised for our iniquities.
Matthew, and his gospel, makes it clear that what was written in Isaiah 53 was all about the Lord Jesus. He healed the sick and cast out evil spirits:
“That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying, himself took our infirmities and bare our sicknesses” (8:17).
Yes, it was Jesus who is despised and rejected for us.
It was Jesus the man of Sorrows who is acquanted with all our griefs, and carried all of our sorrows.
It was Jesus who was wounded for our transgressions, and was bruised for our iniquities, on the cross.
“Jesus paid it all, all to him I owe, sin had left a crimson stain, He washed it white as snow.”
