Last Day a Busy One

MACKEYVILLE – Saturday at the 42nd Annual Clinton County Fair was a combination of raw mechanical power … more relaxed but intense competition … and some genuine physical labor.

The Farm Tractor Pull was the first major event of the day featuring many area residents driving stock machines that could be found working the fields on local farms over the years. These are not the monster modified versions but the rather mundane machines that were utilized for the everyday chores and tasks farmers had to accomplish. Even though these meager machines have less horsepower, the technique and natural competitive nature of the event shines through.

Then at the top of the hill, the action was a bit more physical at the woodsmen competition which featured the savvy skills used in an era gone by when lumbering was the leading industry in north central Pennsylvania.

The contest features various skills that were common core activities in the lumbering camps that were found all over the norther tier in the early part of the century past. Even though technology has eased our daily lives, swinging an axe in skilled hands is still hard work.

Across the fair grounds, the competition was just as fierce , though the action was a bit more laid back. Dozens of contestants pitched throughout the week in the annual contest.

Many of the 4-H members were busy preparing for the Livestock Auction where they can earn some just rewards for their hard effort in raising their stock to save up for college tuition.
