Central Mountain Hosting Mammoth State Wrestling Tourney
BALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP- More than 12-hundred youth wrestlers are descending on the Lock Haven area this weekend as Central Mountain High School hosts the annual Pennsylvania Amateur Wrestling Federation State Championships.
The tournament begins Friday at 5 p.m. with the high school division and resumes Saturday at 9 a.m., wrestling continuing into Sunday, starting at 9 a.m. Eight mats will be in use to accommodate the large turnout.
Porter, president of the Wildcat Wrestling Booster Club, said at the close of registration on Thursday, 1,224 wrestlers, male and female, had registered. He said the wrestling club looks forward to the event: “We’re excited to host this marquee Pennsylvania event. It will be nice for local kids to have the tournament close-by and will also serve as a fundraiser for our booster club.”
Central Mountain wrestlers who have qualified for the state freestyle and greco roman tournament are Collin Bauman and Gavin Heverly, elementary; and junior/senior high participants Dalton Perry, Luke Simcox, Griffin Walizer, Damien Galentine, Derek Keen, Taylor Weaver, Lane Porter, Gage Sutliff, Nik Miller, and Tanner Riggle.
Central Mountain head coach Biff Walizer said the field will be a strong one: “It should be an exciting weekend of wrestling with many state champions and medalists competing here in our own Central Mountain gymnasium. We will follow a similar setup to what we use for the King of the Mountain. Area hotels are sure to be filled and local businesses should benefit from the many families traveling from all over the state to Clinton County for those three days.
