#22 Bald Eagles Soar Past Millersville, 45-0
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The No. 22 Lock Haven University wrestling team (5-2) won all 10 bouts and the Bald Eagles recorded their first shutout in 11 years on Sunday, downing visiting Millersville University (2-6), 45-0.
LHU recorded bonus points in six of 10 wins and posted its first shutout since January 5, 2008 when the Bald Eagles blanked Wagner, 45-0.
It was total dominance from the start as Lock Haven finished with a 16-1 advantage in takedowns. Millersville – ranked No. 25 at the Division II level – didn’t record a takedown until the ninth bout of the dual at 197 pounds.
The Bald Eagles benefitted from three pins, a tech fall, a major and a win by forfeit.
Brandon Loperfido (Columbia, Pa./Hempfield), Alex Klucker (Summerdale, Pa./East Pennsboro) and Parker McClellan (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) all won by fall. Jonathan Ross (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York) won by tech fall at 149 and DJ Fehlman (Warren, Pa./Warren) recorded a major as his drop to 133 continues to pay off for the Bald Eagles. Luke Werner (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) benefitted from a win by forfeit at 125.
Chance Marsteller (New Park, Pa./Kennard-Dale), Austin Bell (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon), Ray Bernot (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield) and Thomas Haines (Quarryville, Pa./Solanco) added wins for Lock Haven.
With the win, LHU improved to 5-2 overall and extended the win streak to 3-0. On the season, Lock Haven is now 2-0 vs. Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) teams. The win helped Lock Haven cap a perfect 2-0 weekend. On Friday at Red
Lion High School, the Bald Eagles won six of 10 bouts and secured a 23-14 upset victory over No. 12 Arizona State.
After Werner won by forfeit at 125, Fehlman majored Ryan McGuire 14-0 at 133 pounds. Loperfido got the nod at 141 and he took full advantage, earning a pin at the 4:14 mark. It was the first of three pins for Lock Haven. At 149, Ross earned a 16-0 tech fall at the 5:36 mark, before Klucker needed just 30 seconds to pin Rob Saum at 157.
In the featured bout of the meet, Marsteller – ranked No. 4 in Division I – downed Millersville’s Shane Ruhnke, 8-5. Marsteller was the aggressor and scored a takedown in each period and dropped the third-ranked 165-pounder in DII.
Bell and Bernot took full advantage of their call into the lineup, posting wins at 174 and 184, respectively.McClellan racked up LHU’s third pin of the day at 197 and Haines – ranked No. 9 at 285 – finished things with a hard-earned win.
LHU now sets its attention on a return to Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) action. Lock Haven is 2-0 in EWL duals this season and will travel to Edinboro University Thursday, Jan. 31 for a 7 p.m. league match.
