Wildcats Earn 47-19 Win over Williamsport

BALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP – The Central Mountain wrestling team did what it had to do Thursday night, taking down an improved Williamsport team by a 47-19 count. The win pushed the Wildcats to 10-1 on the year and set-up two challenging dual meets next week, against Mifflin County and Bellefonte.

Wildcat coach Biff Walizer said he did not believe his team was looking ahead to next week, stating that Williamsport has β€œsome talented, tough kids.” Even in a few of the matches his team members lost, Walizer lauded them for being aggressive. Afterwards, he said he told the squad they need to get β€œa little better every day,” noting they’ve had some difficult matches of late.

Williamsport jumped to a 6-0 lead on two early decisions in a dual that started at 126 pounds. Millionaire sophomore Carson Dawson (12-2) roared to a 9-1 first period lead over Wildcat veteran Dalton Bechdel. The Central Mountain senior fought back but fell by an 11-8 count.

Central Mountain did not get on the scoreboard until 138 pounds when Cody Coleman (16-8) tied things up at 6-6 with a first period fall. They took the lead for good in the next two bouts, a forfeit for Lane Porter (14-8) and a 12-4 major from Alonzo Henry (19-7) at 152.

After a Williamsport win at 160 put the team score at 16-11, the Wildcats blew things open, taking the next six bouts: Austin Confer (11-9), a first period pin; Gage Sutliff (10-11), a forfeit; Nick Miller (13-9), a major; Tanner Riggle (20-7), a major; Jake Edwards (19-4), a second period fall; and Derek Keen (20-5), a technical fall.

The dual meet stood at 47-11 with two bouts to go. The Millionaires’ promising freshmen lightweights, the Bower twins, closed with two wins: a technical fall from Bradon Bower (22-6) at 113 pounds and a 6-0 win for brother Riley Bower (22-6) over Central Mountain veteran Johnny Shreffler (18-5), avenging a loss to Shreffler from last month.

The Wildcats are off until a trip to Mifflin County (9-2) on Wednesday, Jan. 23 and home with Bellefonte (13-2) on Friday, Jan. 25. Both those duals fall after the cutoff date of Tuesday, Jan 22 to determine the seedings for the District 6 team dual tournament scheduled for the Tyrone High School gym on Saturday, Feb. 2.
