Lady Wildcats Battle St. Joseph Academy for 3-1 Win
BALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP – Another day, another win for the Lady Wildcat volleyball team as they got past St. Joseph Academy 3-1. That win didn’t come easy as the Lady Wolves battled back the entire night to keep pace with Central Mountain.
“I saw St. Joe’s play at the tournament, Saturday, they stepped up their game tonight from what I saw on the weekend,” said CM head coach Scott Garman of his opponent, “To say they brought their ‘A Game’ tonight would be an understatement. They really played a phenomenal match. They gave us all we could handle and it was good to see our girls react to the adversity and come back for the win.”
The Lady Wildcat’s edged St. Joe in the first game 25-23 then The Lady Wolves answer back by taking the second game 25-22. Then Central Mountain regrouped to earn a 25-19 win in the third game and closed out game 4 with a 25-17.
Each game was a tough back and forth effort by both teams with the lead never exceeding 5-6 points. Central Mountain would inch away and The Lady Wolves would cut that lead and even surpass the hosts at times. It wasn’t until the last two games that when it became crunch time, the Lady Wildcats held firm and finished strong.
It was a balanced effort by the Lady ‘Cats in this game with the entire lineup making contributions on the court.
“We don’t rely on one person, and I would never want to be in that situation,” Garman said of his squad, “I never want us to be one dimensional. It’s great to see them spread the ball around.”
Offensively for CM Jenni Skow had 5 aces and 8 kills. Loni Duck recorded 3 aces and 12 kills. Evie Rembold had 7 kills, Madison Knepp had 3 aces and McKenzie Hanna had 2aces, 6 kills.Abigail Brinker had 1 ace and 5 assists on the night.
Defensively, the leaders were: Skylar Falls with 15 digs and 10 digs each for Duck and Skow.
The win balances Central Mountain’s record to 3-3 for the season.
The one negative aspect that the Lady Wildcats need to improve upon is service errors. In all, CM had 15 serves that failed to get past the net.
“We’re young and we’re inconsistent,” Garman shared of the rough edges that need to be smoothed out, “It’s going to be maddening at time and you want to pull your hair out, fortunately I don’t have any hair, if I did, I’d be pulling it out. There will be nights when it all goes well for us and we won’t miss much.”
Central Mountain hopes to continue their winning ways and will next see action when they travel to Shamokin on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2018.
