The Demise of Heilig-Meyers Continues
LOCK HAVEN – The rear portion is gone and the front should be down over the next couple days as the process of demolishing the former Heilig-Meyers furniture store on Bellefonte Avenue continues.
The work was to be done by Monday of this week but city manager Greg Wilson said at Monday night’s council meeting that the Schuylkill County contractor has been given an additional week to finish the work. Prep on the building’s front exterior was being carried out on Tuesday.
ADM Logistics of Port Carbon started the demolition of the property at 37-41 Bellefonte Avenue earlier this month. The structure was gutted in a December 2016 fire. Officials have asked the motoring public to exercise caution in the area of the demolition work. The contractor is carrying out the project from the rear to minimize the impact on Bellefonte Avenue traffic. Cost of the work is $64,499. A lien will be placed on the property in an effort to recoup City of Lock Haven costs for the razing. The structure’s most recent owners, Dave Mayes and Brian Osenbach, had plans for a teen-ager nightclub but the proposal never came to fruition.
