Bucktail Softball 2018: Hoping to Build on 2017
By Jim Morgan
FARWELL – The Bucktail Lady Bucks softball team is excited about returning to the field. Why not? They surprised everyone last season with their first winning season 10-9 overall. They entered the District IV play-offs for the first time in school history of the sport and to boot they hosted the first round of the play-off game and won over St. John Neumann.
Coach Mike Poorman was quick to point out, “We were young last year and with the experience of these returning players why shouldn’t they be excited?” Returning letter winners are seniors Maria D’Onofrio, Anna Cowfer, Makenzi Brennan and Danielle Rider. junior Bonnie Mills with sophomores Kayli Casper, Tessa Cowfer, Emma Intallura, Sara Kepler, Emily Cross and Myka Poorman.
The team added some new faces with seniors Tori Brumbaugh, juniors Jasmiine Hoffman and Aaliyah McGowan. Sophomores Megan Wagner and Lexi Labaugh finish out the roster for the Lady Bucks.
A couple of these players were recognized for their 2017 hard work on the field by the Mid-Penn and Pennsylvania High School Softball Coaches Association. Emily Cross was selected for 2nd team All State by the PHSSCA – Catcher and was nominated to the All Rookie Team. Myka Poorman was selected as 1st team Mid-Penn Pitcher and named to the 2nd team All State by the PHSSCA Pitcher. Anna Cowfer was selected to the 2nd team Mid-Penn – Centerfield.
The coaches Poorman, Chuck Cross and Roy Cowfer for the Lady Bucks are still looking for someone to play strong at third base. The rest of the infield is strong with returning players as well as the outfield. On the mound they will go with the arm of M. Poorman as long as the schedule is in their hands. Cross will hold the runners on behind the plate.
The Lady Bucks have one game in so, an opening 8-0 loss to Galeton. On Tuesday, April 3 they will travel to Benton and Thursday, April 5, host Muncy. Both games start at 4:30 p.m., weather permitting.
