13-7 Lady Bucks Streaking
Playoffs Approaching
by Jim Morgan
FARWELL – Before we get excited on what the Bucktail Lady Bucks (13-7) did this past week, the team is pumped-up for the biggest game of the season on Wednesday of this week, a trip to Millville for a 7 p.m. tip-off. Somebody’s winning streak is going to end. Lady Bucks are going for nine in a row and are looking to wreck Millville’s perfect season of 22-0.
Coach Carl Gentzyel is just excited about this game. He feels it will be a different game from the last time. The two squared off in the fourth game of the season as Millville won 72-40. “We are playing much better than at the beginning of the season,” Gentzyel pointed out.
Now let’s get on with what is happening with Lady Bucks basketball this past week. First up the Lady Bucks will not know who they will face in the District 4 Class A playoffs until Sunday or Monday and the site of the game. Right now the Lady Bucks are seeded No. 6 out of 8 teams already in. There are still three teams that have a chance to join the play-off dance.
This past Monday four Lady Bucks scored double digits and that equals eight straight wins as they defeated Midd-West 61-41.
As coach Gentzyel noted, “Everybody is getting into the scoring action and it could not come at a better time. Alaina Tripp and Cheyanne Casper are starting to hit that corner shot from about twelve foot out. Tiffany Werts and Hannah Shearer are just getting more and more strong under the boards as Maria Morgan is getting her assists higher and higher. Shae Cowfer, Emalea Mills are doing a great job coming off the bench for relief.”
Bucktail jumped out to a 9-0 run before Midd-West scored in the first quarter. Morgan and Tripp shared those points as the Lady Bucks pushed the lead to 18-4 at the end of the quarter. Midd-West tried about every defense (box on-one, double teaming her across mid-court, man-to-man) to stop Morgan. What happened you ask? Morgan was hot when she got her shot off and when she found Tripp, Casper and Werts they made it count. Among the four of them they scored over half their total points in the first half.
Morgan had 19 of her total 29 points, Tripp had 6 of her total 10 points, Casper had 8 of her total 12 points and Werts had 6 of her total 10 points. Yes they were the only Lady Bucks that scored in the second half also. Morgan and Werts posted a double-double during the game as Morgan had 11 assists with Werts having 12 rebounds. Casper, Shearer and Tripp also helped out on the boards as they combined for 20 rebounds.
The Lady Bucks pushed their lead to 39-20 at halftime. Lady Bucks came out flat to start the third quarter as Midd-west went on an 8-0 run before coach Gentzyel called timeout. Then the Lady Bucks responded to his timeout as they outscored Midd-West 10-5 to finish the quarter. The Lady Bucks maintained that momentum all the way to the final buzzer as they opened up a 20 point lead before coach Gentzyel started pulling his starters off the floor.
Gentzyel was laughing at the two minute mark in the fourth quarter as he pulled Morgan off the floor. The Midd-West boys Varsity/JV basketball team was booing him for pulling her as they yelled let her in. Morgan’s 29 points got her over the 1,700 point mark as she is within 64 points of the all-time school record of boys and girls. With two regular season games left this week, Stay tuned on next week Record or check-out “therecord-online” for up to date scoring on all Bucktail games.
In the JV game, it was Midd-west jumpimg out to a 17-8 lead and going on to defeat the Lady Bucks 46-30. High scorer for the Lady Bucks was Emalea Mills with 7 points.
Last Friday night was Senior Night for Bucktail, defeating Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech 77-19. On Senior night you are recognized as a player and you tell everyone your future plans and this is the last time you play in front of your home crowd, and WOW! What a crowd there was to support the Lady Bucks; coaches Gentzyel and Morgan would like to thank everyone that came out to the game! It was great and we hope you all come follow us during our play-off run. Also, we would like to thank all the Renovo Midget League Girls for attending the game. They were recognized at the beginning of the game and joined the varsity players for their rally.
Seniors Hannah Shearer, Cheyanne Casper, Tiffany Helgren and Mary Fecteau got to walk out for the last time on the Bucktail court with their parents. But as a starter during your senior year, you hope that this game you shine. Well, Shearer and Casper did just that as Shearer had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Casper finished with her career high of 9 points.
Coach Gentzyel went with the four seniors and junior Morgan to start the game. It was not until the 5 minute mark of the first quarter before the Lady Bucks put the first two points on the board, then it was all Lady Bucks as they led 15-3 at the end of the quarter. The regular starters enter the game to start the second quarter as they showed the hometown crowd why they are about to win seven straight games, the home team outscoring CVMT 28-5 in the second quarter.
Even the best score clock operator John Coover was impressed with the Lady Bucks as he forgot to leave the clock run on the mercy rule in the third quarter.
In the JV game, the Lady Bucks also responded to the hometown crowd as they defeated CMVT 39-18. High scorer for the Lady Bucks was Hailey Risley with 14 points.
Next game after Wednesday’s game with Millville will be at Galeton on Friday starting at 6 p.m. Galeton is having a “Pink Out” this game, so Lady Bucks fans if you are going to the game wear your pink. Galeton has purchased pink t-shirts for the Lady Bucks team to wear during warm-ups. Keep up the great work Lady Bucks.
