Lady Wildcats Finish Regular Season with 11-2 Loss to Shore
BALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP – It wasn’t the finish to the regular season the Central Mountain softball team was looking for the first part of this week.
The Lady Wildcats fell at Mifflinburg 1-0 on Monday, the loss costing CM a shot at the Heartland Conference crown. Today was no better, rival Jersey Shore putting up six first inning runs and coasting to an 11-2 victory.
The losses mean that after a 16-2 start to the season Central Mountain finishes at 16-4 and most likely has lost any chance at the number one seed when the District 6 Quad-A playoff schedule is announced later this week. The district semifinal round is to be played next Wednesday, May 25. CM is likely looking at a number two seed and a match-up with State College. Coach Dave Peters’ team beat the Lady Little Lions by a 4-3 score in an 8-inning game at State in mid-April.
The Lady ‘Cats and Jersey Shore were both coming off 1-0 losses when they met today; ‘Shore showed the bounce back, plating its six in the first, one more in the fourth and putting things away with a 4-run sixth inning.
Central Mountain struggled all game with Jersey Shore’s powerful right-handed pitcher Katie Cowfer. She finished with a 6-hitter, striking out 3 as her defense played perfect ball.
Meanwhile the Lady Bulldogs peppered three CM pitchers for 13 hits; they were helped by two Lady Wildcat errors. Shelby Wenner paced ‘Shore with a three-hit game good for three RBIs. Madison Brown continued her torrid hitting for the home team, going 2-for-3 with two singles. Other CM hits came from Josie Dershem, Kim Coder, Loren Marasco and Maegan Miller, all singles.
