LHU Softball Closes Florida Tour on 5-Game Win Streak
CLERMONT, Fla. – The Lock Haven University softball team (13-7) capped its final day Saturday at the Spring Games in Florida with another two wins. The Bald Eagles downed Charleston (11-4), 2-1 (8 innings) and soared by Assumption (3-9), 8-2 to cap at 14-game week.
The Bald Eagles have won five straight games and went 10-4 in the Sunshine State.
Lock Haven and Atlantic Region power Charleston locked up in a thriller to start the day and the Bald Eagles picked up the thrilling win in the bottom of the eighth, as the two teams needed extra innings.
Michelle Holweger (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) drove in the winning-run in the bottom of the eighth as she doubled to the wall.
The two teams combined for just seven hits as both pitchers were solid.
LHU took the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and Charleston tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth.
Bekah Slattery (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) was the difference maker for Lock Haven. She went eight innings, allowing just four hits, no walks and she recorded four strikeouts.
Slattery improved to 7-3 on the season.
The Bald Eagle gave Charleston pitcher Alli Burdette here first loss (7-1) of the 2016 season.
Holweger picked up a pair of hits in the win.
LHU kept the good times rolling and the bats stayed hot on the final day in the warm Florida sun, as Lock Haven tagged Assumption for eight runs on 10 hits.
Again, Holweger had LHU’s big bat, going 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Gabrielle Henson (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) went 2 for 3 and Faith Ceely (Troy, Pa./Tory) went 2 for 2 with two runs scored.
Jodi Weaknecht (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) smashed a ball over the center field fence for a two-run home run in the third inning, which sparked a three-run inning and fueled the Bald Eagles victory.
Rachel Mouillesseaux (Endicott, N.Y./Union Endicott) picked up the win and recorded four strikeouts. Slattery worked the final 2 and 1/3 innings on the way to her second save of the season. She allowed just one hit and struck out three.
Slattery has allowed just one run over her last four total starts (27 innings) and one total run in her last 29 and 1/3 innings.
LHU is scheduled to play four games at home next weekend (Saturday & Sunday, March 19-20). Lock Haven will host East Stroudsburg (DH) on Saturday (March 19) at 1/3 p.m. and hosts Slippery Rock (DH) on Sunday (March 20) at 1/3 p.m.
