LHU Boxing Home Show Saturday Feb. 27

lhu-boxingLOCK HAVEN — The annual Lock Haven University Boxing Invitational is set for this Saturday at Thomas Field House.

Club sport coach Ken Cooper has been working with a stable of 25 boxers in preparation for the 37th annual staging, this year’s event again presented by Richard L. Powers II, DDS. LHU’s boxing program was started by retired faculty member Dr. Ken Cox who is expected to attend on  Saturday.

Teams scheduled to participate, in addition to the host Bald Eagles, are Shippensburg, West Virginia, Penn State, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Trinity College, Miami of Ohio, West Point and Kutztown.

Cooper said the Bald Eagles will host the collegiate regional tourney Mar. 11, 12 and 13 at LHU’s East Campus gym (the old Lock Haven High School W. Main St. gym). The national tourney this year will be in Seattle, WA April 7, 8 and 9.

Cooper said he was pleased with the development of this year’s squad which includes 21 males and four females. They include Zaire Ali, a national runner-up a year ago, and Tafari Guavesande, a national third place finisher in 2015.

The Bald Eagles train daily after classes in their workout room/ring in the Zimmerli Building.

The home event on Saturday, Feb. 27 will start with a preliminary card at 1:30 p.m., the main card at 7 p.m. Tickets are $3 for children 16 and under; $5 for adult general admission; $7 for the reserved bleacher section; $8 for ringside chair section; and $10 for ringside table seats. Reserved sponsor tables are provided as available; those interested should call coach Cooper at 570-660-5100.
