Fallon Hotel Uncovered
Downtown Beautification Resumes
LOCK HAVEN – A contractor today removed the trees in front of the Fallon Hotel, part of the City of Lock Haven’s ongoing downtown beautification work.
With the removal of the trees the community will get a daily look at the state of the once grand Fallon. Ground for the Fallon was broken in 1854 and after two years of construction it opened in 1856. The Fallon brothers, for whom the hotel was named, had been agents for Maria Christina, Queen of Spain. Historical accounts say her money from the sale of Florida was invested in the hotel and the Lycoming Coal Company in Farrandsville. Much of the current Fallon and its rear addition are no longer in use, although its bar remains open and there is a resident population.
New trees will be planted as part of what is officially the East Water Street Streetscape Project. City planner Leonora Hannagan said the new trees will be a mix of Silver Linden and American Hornbeam, smaller in scale than their predecessors in front of the Fallon.
On Monday of next week work will begin on the south side of E. Water St. Work will include new curbing, brick sidewalks, ornamental lighting and the new trees.
Overall project contractor is Wolyniec Construction, Inc. of Williamsport.
