Optimist’s Roundtable

By Martha Sykes

Recently I got an article out that I had saved from the Record. It was about my Aunt Pearle Marshall who was the original writer of the Optimist’s Roundtable. She is the one who inspired me in my life to become a teacher and a few years ago I decided to begin my own column with the same title!! I never thought I would be able to keep up with it this long but I pray a lot to ask God to inspire me each week to try to keep some good news out there!

As we have now begun November, I thought of our community and how fortunate we are to live here where people care and volunteer to have so many things happen!!

It tells us in the scriptures that God loves a cheerful giver and we have many residents who give of themselves every week to help at the Salvation Army, and others who donate time for our monthly food bank.

Our fire companies, who are heroes to many, donate a day every year to come to our elementary school to celebrate fire prevention week. I can’t express the excitement that the students have when they get to see the fire trucks and learn about what to do if there is a fire. And of course they love seeing Smokey the Bear, as well as Sparky!!

On Monday there will be an assembly to remember and honor our veterans and the high school students will take part in that celebration! It is great for our students to have this opportunity to realize what a veteran is and express their thanks through cards and videos!!

There are good things happening all around us which proves there is good news out there!!

By the way, the Veteran’s Day program is open to the public on Monday at 9:30 AM at the Bucktail High School gym!! Please come and enjoy this wonderful tribute!! And be sure to thank a veteran.
