Words of Grace
Good and Evil
By Rev. Mahlon Nevel
Seven times in the first chapter of Genesis the earth that God created is called good. Then it all changed when Eve chose to do evil instead of good.
Genesis 6:5 tells us that God, who saw the earth as good, now saw it as evil. Everything, that mankind thought to do was evil and not good.
The story of the Bible is a struggle between good and evil. God is good. The devil is evil, and he is called the evil one.
In the sermon Jesus preached to his disciples on the mountain, he taught them the difference between good and evil. He used trees to illustrate his lesson.
He said that every good tree produces good fruit, and every, corrupt tree produces evil fruit. A good tree cannot produce evil fruit, and a corrupt tree cannot produce good fruit. (Matthew 7:17, 18)
Jesus also taught this lesson to the Pharisees. You either make the tree good and its fruit will be good, or you make the tree corrupt and its fruit will be corrupt. Every tree is known by its fruit. (Matthew 12:33)
A good man brings forth good things out of the good treasure of his heart. On the other hand, an evil man brings forth evil things out of the evil treasure of his heart. (V.35),
Jesus said that “there is none good.” All of us have an evil heart, but when Jesus does a work of grace in our heart, we begin to do good things out of the good treasure of our heart.
