Obituary – Stephen Chadwick Smith

Stephen Chadwick Smith, 74, of Lock Haven, passed away Sunday, September 22, 2024 at his home. 

Born August 24, 1950 in Lock Haven, he was the son of the late James Thomas and Meta Chadwick Smith. 

Following graduation from Lock Haven High School in 1968, Steve continued his education at the University of Pennsylvania and Penn State University, before obtaining his Juris Doctorate from Weidner University of Delaware. 

Steve served as a private attorney in Lock Haven for 28 years, as a Clinton County Public Defender for 25 years and as a Federal Public Defender for 10 years. 

He was raised Catholic, attending Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lock Haven, where he participated as an altar server in his youth.

Steve was a former member of the Lock Haven Lion’s Club and Pennsylvania Bar Association. 

He was an avid collector – mostly of antique toys and sports memorabilia, especially Nolan Ryan collectables. 

He is survived by his son, Demian James Smith of Lock Haven; a brother, Greg Smith of Lock Haven; a sister, Beatrice “Bebe” (Richard) Fultz of Lock Haven; two nieces, Dr. Jamie (Matt) Fultz and Annie (Greg) Dutton; and his ever-tolerant ex-wife, Paula Smith. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, September 30, 2024 at 12 P.M. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 310 W. Water St., Lock Haven, PA 17745 with Father Joseph Orr officiating. 

Friends and family will be received on Monday from 10 to 11:30 A.M. at the Donald G. Walker Funeral Home, Inc., 231 High St., Flemington, PA 17745. 

Burial will be held privately at a later date at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Lock Haven. 

Memorial contributions in Steve’s memory may be made through the funeral home to the Clinton County SPCA.
