Salvation Army Thrift Store Renovations Complete
Grand Reopening Monday
LOCK HAVEN — Completion of a several month effort to upgrade and improve the downtown Salvation Army Family Thrift Store will be marked with a ribbon-cutting next Monday.
The thrift store has been at its 111 E. Main St. site since 1998 and Corps Officer Major Marie Harris said the improvements are the outgrowth of a deteriorating roof and resulting leaks at the former J.J. Newberry store building.
Major Harris called the leaking roof “a blessing in disguise” as the Corps, while responsible for the needed roof repairs, was able to use insurance proceeds to fix up the damaged first floor selling area to give it a more retail look.
Community members can see the improvements as part of the 11:30 a.m. Monday ribbon-cutting, the occasion marked with specials throughout the store through Saturday, April 4.
Major Harris expressed hope the store improvements will lead to increased sales as all money raised from sale of the donated items stays in the community to support the Salvation Army mission.
Those services locally include youth work, the More than Bread lunch program at the Citadel on E. Church St. and assistance to community members in need.
Major Harris lauded the work of the Army’s local advisory board and Major Charles Deitrick from the organization’s Command Headquarters in New York for assistance in making the upgrade a reality.
With the advent of spring, Major Harris said, the Salvation Army would welcome donated items from local residents in the process of spring house cleaning. More information may be obtained by calling the Citadel at 748-2951.
