Unlock Your Ancestry: Ross Library & CCGS Offer Genealogy Classes in August
LOCK HAVEN – The Ross Library and Clinton County Genealogical Society (CCGS) will conduct a three-part “Introduction to Genealogy” class at the Ross Library, 234 West Main Street, Lock Haven, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM on Monday, August 5; Tuesday, August 6; and Thursday, August 8, 2024.
The classes will be conducted by CCGS member and retired Ross Library Executive Director, Diane Whitaker; Ross Library Adult Services Coordinator, Lou Bernard; and CCGS and Friends of Ross Library member Loretta Coltrane.
“The classes will introduce attendees to a basic introduction of what genealogy is, how to use the many genealogy resources in the Ross Library’s Pennsylvania Room to research local family ancestors, and to learn about online Genealogy Resources on the Ross Library website,” said Whitaker.
Attendees will tour the first floor Pennsylvania Room to learn where specific resource materials are located, to include books about Introductory Genealogy, compiled Family Genealogies, Ship Passenger Indexes, Census and Marriage Records, Clinton County Cemeteries and who is buried there, City Directories, Historical Scrapbooks, and Sanborn city maps and more. Attendees will also learn how to use the Historical/Genealogy card file and microfilms of area old newspapers to find ancestors.
“Whether you are a long-time genealogy researcher or just starting to trace your family’s roots, these classes and a Genealogy Toolkit built with handouts during each class session will be very helpful to organize and plan your searches and specifically to locate people who lived in Clinton County,” said Coltrane.
According to Lou Bernard, if you are looking for family stories or trying to find articles or family ancestors’ obituaries in old newspapers, the Card File and Microfilm resources will be very helpful.
Pre-Registration is required for the class. Interested individuals can register at the Ross Library Checkout Desk or via email at coltrane.loretta@gmail.com.
Attendees will be given a worksheet at registration and asked to bring the completed worksheet with them for use during the classes. The sheet will need to list information about themselves, their parents, grandparents and great grandparents to include full names, birth dates, location of birth, death dates, and maiden names for female ancestors.
